Chapter 18

Patrick

I took the breath that somehow drew me from sleep to awake and semi-aware of my surroundings, and then I inhaled again, drawing Jo’s scent deep into my chest. Mornings were never a chore anymore. It was always a joy to wake up to Jo within arm’s reach.

She breathed softly, still asleep next to me, and I carefully wrapped an arm over her waist, part in protection and part to reassure myself she was actually there. And then I basked in the silence. There was definitely something to be said for waking up with the two of us still alone, without the splashing noises of Jackson doing his daily laps in my pool…although I was conflicted over that because I missed him when he wasn’t there.

Still, perhaps the ability to just hold Jo was better. Here, we were, in our own little world, tucked away from social media and anything out there in Carwyn City that might hurt us. Perhaps this was the dream.

Maybe it was even the future and the way forward for our life together. After all, my parents had never based themselves in the city, and Dad had done all his alpha duties for the pack from Pointsville, which Davina had always stated was way out in the boonies.

Secretly, I’d always agreed with her, but now that I had a mate to consider and perhaps a family one day…

I shook my head, though, disagreeing with myself, the pillow rustling beneath me as I did. There was no way any other location could ever be safer than Lycan Heights. I’d built that building into a fucking fortress, capable of withstanding not only physical attacks but power outages and food shortages.

My security team and pack soldiers were well-trained, and my artillery collection would make an army commander weep. And while Silver Claw wasn’t a pack of preppers, we had enough resources to remain protected during a disaster—and not just food. We had access to water, personal hygiene items, and medicine. Plus, I had pack members trained in all kinds of health fields. I’d built our group to be self-sufficient.

Leaving Carwyn City, then, wasn’t really an option. Unless it was something Jo wanted to do. Then I’d move Heaven and Earth to make it happen.

As if she knew my thoughts were centered on her, Jo stirred, her own waking gentle as she blinked her eyes open.

“Good morning.” I smiled at her, partly embarrassed to be caught watching her sleeping like some kind of creeper.

She smiled back. “Good morning,” she replied as she burrowed closer into my arms for an early morning cuddle. She was still warm, her body temperature raised by the act of being asleep.

“You’re like an oven this morning,” I said as I held her close.

She smiled sleepily. “Hot stuff.”

I chuckled then my thoughts returned to the issue of where we should make our home. “Jo?”

“Hmm?” She lifted her head a little and met my gaze.

“Where do you think we should live after we get married? I realize we have options.
